Samples of unusual plastic-like substances that washed up on the beaches along the Coromandel Peninsula have been sent to scientists for testing.

On Saturday, residents of Matarangi Beach collected six bags of white strips on their 100-meter-long beach. These white strips looked like shredded paper but felt like plastic.

Today, Thames-Coromandel District Council Civil Defense Controller Garry Towler stated that the sample is being sent to the Waikato District Council for their scientists to confirm what it is.

"Fresh samples were collected today and will be sent to Hamilton. The result may not be back today. I should know tomorrow."

Peter Collins, a resident of Matarangi Beach, said a woman posted a photo on a local Facebook page on Thursday to let him know about the substance.

"This picture is of the woman holding a handful of things she picked up from Matarangi Beach," Peter said.

"She asked,'What is this?' I went down and saw that it was the full length of Matarangi Beach. It was more than a kilometer long."

Wanting to know if it might be plastic, Peter immediately tried to contact the local district and district committee.

After feeling deceived and making a circle, he decided to do it himself.

"If it were plastic, it would be washed back to the sea and harm our marine life and wild birds," Peter said.

"The Waikato District Council pollution said that they don't want to deal with it and don't have a budget. I need to contact the local council."

Peter then contacted the Thames Coromandel District Council.

"They are still arguing with the WRC pollution team, but have not made any promises. On Wednesday, the beach was clear. This happened after the tide on Thursday. TCDC said it contacted the Waikato Regional Committee Pollution Team. WRC said it was local rubbish. problem."

Still do not know whether it is plastic, and can not invite anyone in the council to see if it is plastic, Peter felt that something needed to be done.

"I have tested it in flames. It will melt and will not decompose, it just becomes brittle," Peter said.

"The committee confirmed that this is plastic waste through phone calls and recordings."

On Saturday, about 30 community members joined to help him clean up the beach, carefully selecting the white plastic-like substance on the beach that was engulfed by seaweed and washed into the sand.

On Sunday, Peter heard from others that this strange substance also appeared on many other beaches in the Coromandel-Whangapoa Beach, Matarangi Beach, Ring Beach, Opito Beach, Kwa Otu Nuo Beach and Otama Beach.

He asked people on Facebook to check their beaches and learned that it was also on Waiheke Island and St Leonards Beach.

Coromandel MP Scott Simpson recorded his video at Matarangi Beach on Sunday. Photo: Peter Collins.

After hearing about it on Sunday morning, Coromandel MP Scott Simpson drove over from the Thames to see for himself.

"I took some back to the Thames," Simpson said.

"Once it dries, it becomes organic, not plastic. But when it is wet, it has the texture of plastic.

"When I saw it on the beach for the first time on Sunday, it looked and felt like plastic. I can fully understand why the locals care about it.

"It's in the foreshore environment, it doesn't look like part of the foreshore environment. But when I take it away and dry it out-I'm just a layman-it looks organic."

On Sunday night, the Thames-Coromandel District Council Emergency Management Team issued a message stating that they had confirmed from the Waikato District Council that “the debris that looked like plastic washed up on the east coast was organic matter” and that it was dead sea grass.

Peter said that he and other Matarangi residents were surprised that the committee could determine that it was organic and not plastic without seeing it in person.

The community has been discussing what the substance might be.

Ideas range from Wang Chao who brought dead seaweed ashore, or possibly artificial seaweed from sea pads placed in Whangapoa Port.

"This is something that anyone here has never seen before," Peter said. "Now many people say on Facebook that it is not organic. We need to know. If it is seaweed, has dredging killed all of it? Therefore, it is an important part of the ecosystem.

"I called the department and asked them how to test," Peter said.

"They were not sure, and said they told Gary Toller that it was seaweed. They didn't know if it was tested."

Garry is the Civil Defence Controller of the Emergency Management Team of the Thames-Coromandel District Council.

"I told them that hundreds of volunteers had resigned because of this letter. They are responding to me," Peter said.

On Monday morning, Peter got in touch with a marine scientist at the University of Otago and sent samples via express.

He also sent samples to SunLive, which will be sent to marine scientists in Tauranga.

He said the locals wanted to know if they would continue to collect it until they got the results.

"I couldn't find any test sites in Whitianga, and even the DOC couldn't help there," Peter said.

"If we wait for weeks or days and find that it is man-made, it will be devastating."

Simpson was very happy that he took an hour-long journey from the Thames on Sunday to find himself.

"It is really wrong not to go and see. Anything that may become an environmental disaster, we need to understand immediately."

Wendy Valois, the head of the communications team at the Waikato District Council, told SunLive on Monday afternoon that the District Council will review the materials and that the District Council did not tell anyone in the District Council that it was organic on Sunday.

"Until they see it under the microscope, our scientists can't determine what it is," Wendy said.

"We have many scientists who will observe the sample when it arrives. They will seek to determine under the microscope whether it is man-made or a naturally occurring substance."

Wendy did not know how a letter sent by the Thames-Coromandel District Council on Sunday included the Waikato District Council that has confirmed that the material is organic, and the District Council has not yet visited it.
