The Estacada School Board has chosen to install a turf field at the Buzz Randall Stadium.
At a meeting on Thursday, December 9, the board of directors voted to purchase and install artificial turf in the stadium with an operating budget of no more than US$2 million. The board members also hope to cooperate with members of the Estacada community to provide in-kind donations to the project.
The board of directors began to discuss the possibility of constructing a turf field for the Buzz Randall Stadium at its meeting last month. The grass court was recently determined by OSAA as unable to participate in the quarter-final football game of Estacada High School, which resulted in the game against La Grande being moved to Sandy High School.
At the November 10 meeting, Superintendent Ryan Carpenter considered Bathrandall Stadium "a major emergency safety issue."
School board members also watched video testimonies of student athletes in November. They pointed out that playing on the court usually feels unsafe and that outdoor sports sometimes need to be done indoors, especially in late autumn.
