RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) – Ravenswood’s football program has been hard at work through the winter and now into June drills trying to erase the pain of the season of 2021.

Eric Hupp is set to begin his fifth season at the helm of the Red Devils and his program will look to enjoy success after enduring a winless campaign in 2021.

The Red Devil schedule has the same foes from a year ago.

It is a slate full of challenges.

But one Hupp knows his latest edition of Red Devils will embrace.

Ravenswood will get to open its season at home Aug. 26 against the Blue Eagles of Magnolia.

Next will come a showdown with the Blue Devils from St. Marys. Jodi Mote’s program has become a Class A state title contender year in and year out.

Mote has two state titles to his credit while coaching his alma mater.

The contest with the Blue Devils will be staged Sept. 2.

Ravenswood returns home Sept. 9 to meet perennial power Williamstown.

Last season, Chris Beck’s Yellowjackets made it all the way to Wheeling Island Stadium to compete for the Class A state title.

Ravenswood hits the road for its fourth game Sept. 16 at Wilson-Eismon Field in Elizabeth against the Wirt County Tigers.

Head coach Jason Hickman is well on his way to restoring pride in the Tiger program that was enjoyed during his first stint as Wirt’s head coach. One of his teams in his earlier time with the program reached Class A’s Final Four.

The Sherman Tide, a playoff team last season under first-year head coach Kevin Buzzard, will be Ravenswood’s home opponent Sept. 23.

The Tide was part of the Class A postseason field of 16 in 2021.

The Red Devils journey to Ellenboro in Ritchie County Sept. 30 to meet the Rebels.

While Ritchie lost several key weapons, the program is stoked following its Class A state championship win over Williamstown last December.

The title was the first in school history.

One player who does return for the Rebels this season is Haught’s son, Ethan, who will be a senior quarterback/defensive back.

Adding to Ritchie’s state championship success is the fact the school’s home football venue — Chuck Schofield Memorial Stadium — is getting quite the facelift.

The stadium will have brand new artificial turf and an eight-lane all-weather track.

October begins with a home encounter against the Wahama White Falcons.

Ravenswood and Wahama will lock horns the seventh day of the month.

The annual showdown with the White Falcons is one of Ravenswood’s better rivalries.

Next up, Ravenswood pays a visit to one of Class A’s greatest shrines — Cline Stansberry Stadium — for a meeting with the Doddridge County Bulldogs.

Doddridge, which will host the Devils on October 14, reached the semifinals of Class A last year before falling to Williamstown.

Buffalo pays a visit to Ravenswood on October 21 for the final home game inside Spano-Taylor Stadium at Flinn Field.

The Bison will be under the direction of a new head coach this season, though, a gentleman who is familiar with the program.

Veteran Bob Mullett heads back to Buffalo. Mullett previously spent one year guiding the Putnam County school’s football fortunes.

Mullett, who has been the director for the WCHS-TV/FOX 11 North-South All-Star Football Classic, the past several years has a head coaching resume that includes stints with Concord University, Van High School, Scott High School and old Gauley Bridge High School.

He’s also worked as an assistant at West Virginia Tech, West Virginia State and Nitro High School.

Mullett most recently guided John Adams Middle School football to championship success.

Ravenswood ends the regular season of 2022 against the Roane Raiders in Spencer October 28.

County Stadium will look much different this season as it too gets artificial turf.

Head coach Paul Burdette, who recently worked the N-S Classic as a North assistant, saw his Raiders of 2021 reach the second round of the Class AA playoffs, where they gave a gallant effort before falling to eventual runner-up Independence.
