The Indian men's hockey team brought home an Olympic medal for the first time in 41 years.

Today (August 5th), India beat Germany 5-4 to win the bronze medal. This is the fourth medal that India has won in Tokyo so far.

After beating Britain 3-1 in the quarter-finals on August 1, India entered the semi-finals against Belgium with confidence. At halftime of the game on August 2nd, the two teams fought 2-2. But the game got rid of India in the next 45 minutes, Belgium won 5-2 and lost the chance to win the gold medal.

Once a hockey legend, India has fallen out of favor in the past few decades. But the resilience shown by Tokyo 2020 is inspiring. Even if the men’s team’s gold medal is far away, the Indians are united behind the team in the fight for the bronze medal.

From 1928 to 1956, the Indian men's hockey team won six consecutive Olympic gold medals in the Olympics. Pakistan broke the consecutive top base in Rome in 1960 and reduced India to a silver medal, but rebounded and won the championship during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

The winning streak in the 1940s and 1950s led to hockey being touted as the country's national sport. It was not until 2012 that when the authorities responded to a 10-year-old girl’s request for the right to know, it was revealed that India did not actually have a national movement.

The glory faded from then on. India only won the gold medal again in Moscow in 1980. Since then, it has not won any medals in this sport.

Some people attribute the 1976 artificial turf trade to the depression of the grassland. Others blame poor performances on mismanagement and false pride. Not only did the sports authorities not lay enough turf for training, but the team was also affected by internal politics and red tape.

In any case, this time the Indian hockey team fought an uphill battle. The women's team entered the Olympic semifinals for the first time this year. However, Argentina defeated them 2-1, shattering India's hopes of winning a medal.

In addition to medals, greater victory may be India's new hope for the sport.
