The installation cost of artificial grass is very high, but no matter what the weather is, it can stay green and wear badly. Once installed, it requires almost no maintenance.

If you don't want to pour water on the lawn to keep it green, artificial grass may be your best choice. Our professional artificial turf test found some of the hardest turf.

It is difficult to distinguish the best fake grass from the real grass from a distance. One of our artificial grasses at Best Buy has a strand of brown in the middle of the green, making it look more natural-after all, not every blade of grass is pure green even on a well-tended lawn. However, this is the most expensive artificial grass we have tested.

Compared with polypropylene grass, artificial grass made of nylon can resist various elements better. It is a particularly strong plastic fiber, so if you are looking for an artificial turf that can withstand children and pets, consider using nylon grass.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, this is a good choice. Polyethylene artificial turf has a natural appearance, soft texture, and feels like real grass. You obviously won't run a lawn mower on it, but remember to brush or rake it occasionally.

Although polypropylene grass is usually the cheapest option, it is also the least durable artificial grass. Therefore, it is best to use this grass in a small area rather than on a large lawn.

Most artificial grass is rolled into two to four meters wide rolls. In terms of cost, their prices range from £10 to £30 per square meter (equivalent to carpets).

Compared with real turf (costing up to £6 per square meter), fake turf is expensive, but you can still save money in the long run. After all, you don't have to buy and maintain a lawn mower, or buy any lawn fodder. You will also save time because there is no need to mowing, raking or reseeding.

You can try to lay it by yourself, but if you want a perfectly level lawn and high-quality finishes, it is best to hire a local gardener or artificial turf expert to do it for you.

Many manufacturers will provide suitable grass for you, and the price varies according to the complexity of your garden. Prices for installation of 50 square meters range from £1,000 to £2,700-the price of artificial grass alone has doubled.

Most worms and soil insects that thrive on real lawns cannot survive under artificial grass. This means that fake grass is not attractive to blackbirds and other birds, and will not absorb carbon dioxide or have a cooling effect in summer. In some cases, if the weather becomes very warm, the artificial turf may become very hot, making it uncomfortable to walk.

Since it is mainly made of plastic, recycling is also very tricky. Some places will accept it, but they are not always well advertised, and usually old artificial turf ends up in landfill. Although some manufacturers claim that their products can be used for 10-20 years, the life span of artificial grass will not be as long as a real lawn.

If you have artificial turf and want to get rid of it, your first stop should be to contact the manufacturer. Many of them plan to be there where they will collect your old lawn for free and dispose of it safely. Do not dump it directly into the trash can or take it to the tip, as it will take decades to decompose.

Most of us think that artificial grass is a fake dark green. But there are a variety of shades to choose from, many of which include brown fiber bundles and "grass blades" of different heights to simulate a normal lawn.

It is worthwhile to research colors and finishes thoroughly and request samples of different materials to ensure they meet your requirements. With artificial grass, you usually get value for money.

The cheapest product looks like the bright green bagels used by greengrocers. This is ok on the golf course, but not what you want in the garden.

Some mid-priced grasses have single-stranded plastics that are very similar to real grasses. Keep the strands upright by brushing a layer of fine sand into the pile. The sand must be renewed once a year and may need to be brushed occasionally to keep the strands upright.

Our highest-scoring Best Buy artificial grass is not the most expensive, but it can easily be mistaken for real grass.
