(ECNS) -- A total of 1,200 artificial reefs were put in South Dongting Lake in Yuanjiang, central China's Hunan Province, on Tuesday.

It is reported that this is the first time that artificial reefs have been placed in the lake.

Meanwhile, 40,000 triangle mussels and 8.35 million baby fish including grass carp, silver carp, and bighead carp were also put into the water.

The move aims to provide a good habitat and feeding field for baby fish and shrimp so as to speed up the recovery of aquatic biodiversity.

South Dongting Lake is part of Dongting Lake, the second largest fresh water lake in China.
