Getting some fresh air with Fido is a great way to spend a summer day – but the hot temperatures could cause pain for your pup. Walking over hot pavement can lead to burned paws. Fortunately, it’s easy to protect your dog from scalding surfaces using these veterinarian-approved tips.

As a dog parent, keeping your pup happy and healthy is a top priority. Summertime is ideal for playing and walking outside. However, spending too much time in the sweltering heat isn’t safe for you or your pooch.

Jerry Klein, DVM, Chief Veterinary Officer for American Kennel Club (AKC), describes why heated pavement can be dangerous.

“Pavement, like asphalt or artificial grass, can become incredibly hot and cause discomfort [and] blisters, and burn a dog’s paw pads,” he explains to AKC. “If the temperature is 85 degrees or over without the chance for the pavement to cool down, the ground may be too hot for safely walking a dog.”

Klein adds that heated pavement increases your dog’s body temperature — making them more likely to develop heat stroke. The good news: there are simple ways to prevent your dog from getting these heat-related injuries.
