North Florida has seen the arrival of its first new 18-hole golf course in 20 years with the Stillwater Golf and Country Club. Designed by Bobby Weed Golf Design (BWGD), the course is located in an adult gated community in St. Johns County and features a unique hole routing that allows members to play in loops of three, six, nine and 12 holes.
Environmental sustainability was of chief importance to the design. BWGD created the course to only have 70 acres of irrigated turf, out of a total of 148 acres, saving up to 25 million gallons of water. Additionally, the use of Bermuda grass on the fairways, tees and approaches uses 38% less water than similar grasses. The course also has no rough; all fairways are mowed to the same height. Finally, the cart paths have been replaced with 18 acres of shell screenings to reduce maintenance and provide visual contrast.
Other unique features include sod wall EcoBunkers, layers of artificial sod stacked at 55- to 60-degree angles to emulate Scottish pot bunkers; lay-down walls in the water hazards instead of traditional bulkheads, made of planks of treated timber; and a 16-acre practice facility meant to be enjoyed at all times of the year in all weather. The driving range features covered hitting bays equipped with Toptracer Range, and the practice facility houses three putting and chipping greens as well as a 16,041-square-foot putting course.
“Stillwater delivers terrific shot values with ample playing areas that encourage the old-style game of low, running approach shots,” Weed said. “It is incumbent upon us as architects to be good stewards of the environment, while simultaneously designing courses that create interest, flexibility and fun. We accomplished these goals at Stillwater.”
Other amenities available to residents of the community include a clubhouse with on-site restaurant and pro shop, a resort-style swimming pool, fitness center, and pickleball and tennis courts.
