After two years on and off the market, billionaire businessman Steve Wynn has unloaded his lavish Sin City mansion for $17.5 million. Though the sale price is far below the last ask of $24.5 million, it is several million more than the $13 million the 80-year-old former casino titan paid in March 2018 and ranks as the highest residential sale in Las Vegas to date this year.
Widely credited with bringing elite luxury to the Las Vegas Strip, Wynn resigned as CEO of Wynn Resorts in 2018, in the wake of numerous harassment and sexual misconduct accusations reported in The Wall Street Journal. Wynn denied the allegations. Nonetheless, as part of the resultant separation agreement with the company that he founded in 2002 and that still bears his name, he was evicted from the plush duplex villa at the Wynn Las Vegas, where he and his wife, Andrea Hissom, lived for about a decade. It was this turn of events that led Wynn and Hissom to seek new residential circumstances where they could shack up when in town.
Tucked into the prestigious guard-gated Country Club Hills development, about 12 miles west of The Strip, in the Summerlin planned community, the ochre-colored Mediterranean mansion was custom built in 2001 for, oddly enough, Wynn’s brother Kenny Wynn and his wife Dale, who sold up in 2009 for $5.675 million. The second owner remodeled the mansion before selling it to Wynn, who then spent a fortune to have it remodeled again.
Dubbed Museo by the avid contemporary art collector, whose vast collection includes works by Matisse and Picasso, the 15,000 square foot Mediterranean mansion sits behind huge iron gates on nearly 1.5 resort-worthy acres. There are six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, plus a trio of powder rooms, in about 15,000 square feet. If the interiors resemble the alternatively mannered and showy opulence of a five-star hotel, that’s probably because they were done up by Todd-Avery Lenahan, one of the hospitality industry’s leading designers and currently president and chief creative officer of Wynn Design & Development.
Built to exacting standards, the humongous house is appointed with the highest caliber materials and finishes. Highlights include a dramatically lighted and crystal accented staircase in the double-height foyer, custom carpets and electronic window coverings throughout, gleaming marble floors, and walls sheathed in mohair and silk. The tile in the laundry room is emblazoned with a Louis Vuitton wedding ring quilt pattern, and even the four-car garage got the deluxe treatment, with arched doors and travertine floor tiles.
In addition to all the usual rooms — spacious formal living and dining rooms, high-end gourmet kitchen with sunny breakfast room etc. — there’s also a plush screening room, two executive-sized offices, both with unique ceiling treatments, and a family room that boasts a temperature-controlled wine cellar. Each of the guest bedrooms is decked out with a private bathroom, while the sprawling main bedroom provides two deluxe (and fully carpeted) bathrooms and two gigantic boutique-like walk-in closets lined in piano-finish white lacquer built ins.
Other notable amenities include high-tech security, a fire suppression system, and smart home technology that controls just about everything, including the heating and cooling systems, the lighting, and the audio-visual equipment.
Backed up to the manicured greens of the TPC Summerlin course and sequestered behind a hedgerow of arborvitae and other foliage, the estate’s grounds offer a huge motor court, plus a secondary motor court with garage access, a boxwood trimmed rose garden with a tiered fountain at its center, and vast swathes of easy maintenance ever-green artificial turf. Four palm trees tower over the four corners of the swimming pool, and the property’s slight elevation allows for scenic views of the mountains that form the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
Wynn was represented in the transaction by Kristen Routh-Silberman of Corcoran Global Living, while the buyer was handled by Elizabeth Schwartz Fray at Urban Nest Realty.
No stranger to the property gossip columns, Wynn maintains a number of ultra-expensive homes across the United States, not to mention a boat as big as a ship. His holdings currently include a $70 million penthouse atop the Ritz Carlton in New York, a $43 million oceanfront estate in Palm Beach, and a 27,000-square-foot Beverly Hills mansion that, after it first hit the market at $115 million, is now up for grabs at $100 million. Wynn’s big ol’ boat, Aquarius, stretches 302 feet long with a glass-bottom swimming pool and a helipad. Not that he needs the money — Forbes estimates he sits on $3.3 billion fortune — the art-filled luxury liner, where Roy Lichtenstein’s “In the Car” hangs behind a wet bar in one of the many lounges, is available for charter at a gasp-worthy rate of $1.5 million per week, plus expenses.
