Firefighters are dealing with a fire near the Southend United football field, where "a large number" of artificial turf is on fire.

Four staff members of the Essex Fire and Rescue Service participated, and they were called to the Roots Hall at 17:45 British Summer Time.

It said the fire was "generating a lot of smoke" and the staff were working hard to prevent it from spreading.

They advise people living nearby to keep doors and windows closed.

The service said that the fire did not affect the stadium itself, but it is expected to be a "prolonged incident."

Since the 1950s, this 12,000-seat stadium has been the host of Southend United.

The club has just been relegated from the football league, this is the first time in 101 years.
