A massive 257-acre regional park in Aldie officially opens on Friday after many years of planning and construction and the public are invited to attend special grand opening events Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Located between the communities of Brambleton and Willowsford on Evergreen Mill Road, Hal and Berni Hanson Regional Park was the dream of the Hanson family to sell the farm to Loudoun County to be used as a park for the community, according to county documents.

“We are so excited to cut the ribbon on this one-of-a-kind park for the residents and visitors of Loudoun County. This project truly has been a collaborative effort which has resulted in a park that will provide recreational opportunities for all of Loudoun Community for generations,” said Loudoun County Parks and Recreation Director Steve Torpy in a statement.

The family-friendly celebration on Saturday includes moon bounces, food trucks, lawn games, an open house of the new nature center, a park tour shuttle and an open house at The Lodge.

In 2009, the county purchased the Hanson property and began the process of planning the park’s features and design as well as nearby road and park access improvements.

The $91 million park is designed to be a major destination for area residents as it includes multiple features such as 17 athletic fields with lighting, with 10 multi-purpose soccer fields, four baseball and softball fields, four tennis or pickleball courts, a cricket field, two artificial turf fields, an outdoor basketball court, two playgrounds with rubberized surfaces, batting cages and a splash pad and playground with inclusive features.

One highlight is a skate park which has been designed with the guidance of well-known skate park designer Wally Holladay.

Other park features include five ponds, fishing piers, picnic pavilions, an amphitheater, off-leash area for dogs, disc golf course, paved and natural surface trails, concession buildings, and an equestrian facility which has not yet been built.

Loudoun County Supervisor Tony Buffington, R-Blue Ridge, who was instrumental in obtaining the funding for the park which is in his district, told the Times-Mirror that he excited to see it open to the public.

"This is an amazing park, not only for the large communities of Brambleton and Willowsford, who are within walking distance, but to residents throughout Loudoun and our surrounding counties," Buffington said.
